Srinagar capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the northernmost state of India, Srinagar is situated in the lap of the Himalayas, at an altitude of 1560 meters, or 5200 feet, above sea level, on both banks of the river Jhelum which is spanned by nine bridges. The eastern suburbs of the city extend to the shore of the Dal Lake. Spring-fed, the 6 km long, 3 km wide lake is divided into four distinct parts by causeways - Gagribal, Lokutdal, Boddal and Nagin. Moored along the banks of the lake are Srinagar's unique houseboats - ornately carved, richly furnished, with exotic names. Srinagar has a population of 1,273,312 as of 2011 census. Languages commonly spoken are Urdu and Hindi.
